The first official images have been released for Under Salt Marsh, a brand-new crime series filmed and set in Wales. The six-part drama brings together a high-profile cast and striking Welsh locations, building early excitement ahead of its late-January debut on Sky.
Kelly Reilly Leads a Powerful Cast
The series stars Kelly Reilly, widely known for her role as Beth Dutton in Yellowstone. In Under Salt Marsh, Reilly plays Jackie Ellis, a former detective whose career and personal life were derailed by an unresolved case.
Now working as a teacher, Jackie is pulled back into tragedy when events in her community reopen old wounds.
She is joined by acclaimed Welsh actor Sir Jonathan Pryce, famous for portraying Prince Philip in The Crown. Pryce takes on the role of Solomon Bevan. Also appearing is Kimberly Nixon, best known for Fresh Meat.
The wider cast includes Harry Lawtey, Dino Fetscher, Rhodri Meilir, and Julian Lewis Jones, adding further Welsh talent to the ensemble.
Filmed Across Iconic Welsh Locations
Production took place across Anglesey and Gwynedd, showcasing some of Wales’ most recognisable landscapes. The fictional town of Morfa Halen—meaning “Salt Marsh” in Welsh—serves as the story’s setting.
Viewers will spot Aberffraw in the series trailer, where filming occurred in early 2025. Other locations include Newborough Forest, Malltraeth, and Menai Bridge. In Gwynedd, cast and crew were seen filming along Barmouth’s promenade in October 2025, with additional scenes shot in Fairbourne and Llanbedr.
A Dark Mystery at the Heart of the Story
The plot begins as Morfa Halen braces for a rare, once-in-a-generation storm. Amid rising tension, Jackie Ellis discovers the body of her eight-year-old pupil, Cefin, who appears to have drowned.
The tragedy sends shockwaves through the town and revives painful memories of another mystery—the disappearance of Jackie’s niece, Nessa, who vanished three years earlier and was never found.
Jackie is forced to confront her past when she reunites with her former partner, Detective Eric Bull. Bull has returned to lead the investigation, determined to redeem himself in the eyes of a community he once let down.
