In this course, you will build on your knowledge and professional experience with computer hardware, operating systems, and networks as you acquire the specific skills required to implement basic security services on any type of computer network.

The lab-intensive environment gives each student in-depth knowledge and practical experience with the current essential security systems. Students will begin by understanding how perimeter defences work and then be led into scanning and attacking their own networks. Students then learn how intruders escalate privileges and what steps can be taken to secure a system. Students will also learn about intrusion detection, policy creation, social engineering, open source intelligence, incident handling, and log interpretation.

At the end of the course, a student will have an understanding of: the themes and challenges of network security, the role of cryptography, the techniques for access control and intrusion detection, the current state of the art. The student will have developed a critical approach to the analysis of network security, and will be able to bring this approach to bear on future decisions regarding network security.
