The European Computer Driving Licence® (ECDL) is the internationally recognised qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. The record breaking ECDL is the fastest growing IT user qualification in over 125 countries.
ECDL is designed specifically for those who wish to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects. No prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is needed to study ECDL.
How ECDL works?
The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and society. It is broken down into seven modules, each of which must be passed before an ECDL certificate is awarded.Once you registered with LondonSAM, a logbook listing all 7 modules will be issued.
The modules may be taken in any order and over any period of time up to three years - even all at once - offering maximum flexibility. When all 7 modules have been successfully passed, the logbook is exchanged for a certificate and ECDL 'licence' card.
Benefits of taking ECDL
Raise your level of competency in IT and computing skills
Improves your productivity at home and work
Requires no prior knowledge of IT or computer skills
Provides you with a worldwide recognised qualification
The seven modules that make up the ECDL are:
Basic concepts of IT
Using the computer and managing files
Word processing
Spreadsheets
Database
Presentation
Information and Communication
ECDL advanced
The ECDL Advanced qualification is designed to progress the computer skills benchmark from the internationally successful European Computer Driving Licence® (ECDL) to the next level of competence
How ECDL advanced works
It is based on the ECDL task-based model, and tests an individual's competence at a much higher level with particular applications. It is modular and a certificate is awarded for successfully passing a test for each module. Currently in the UK, ECDL Advanced is split into 4 modules:
Word Processing
Spreadsheets
Database
Presentation
Benefits of taking ECDL advanced
ECDL Advanced will prove that an individual's competence with computer use is well above the basic skill level, and will help determine suitability for jobs involving computer use at a higher level.
The extensive use of computers in many business functions today has brought into existence a variety of roles that rely on extensive knowledge of particular computing tools. An employee holding an ECDL Advanced certificate can prove they have the competence to effectively and efficiently use these tools, to benefit the organisation.

What is the log book
Everyone undergoing training for the ECDL will require a Log Book which is used to maintain a formal record of their success in the various tests. It also provides a registration number for the qualification. The logbook is known overseas as the 'Skills Card'.
What happens when I finish ECDL?
When all seven modules are completed, the completed Log Book will be sent by LondonSAM to BCS (via recorded delivery), with a clear note of the name and address of the centre to which the certificate pack should be returned.
What happens if I fail a test?
There is an opportunity to re-sit a test if you fail. General feedback explaining where mistakes have occurred will be given to you. However, manually marked test papers or printouts of automated tests solutions will not be handed back.
What is the purpose of the credit card that comes with the certificate pack?
These cards are portable version of the ECDL certificate, to present at job interviews and to demonstrate your competency in IT. They were first issued in January 2003 and every ECDL graduate since then has been issued with one. At present, there are no plans to backdate to previous candidates.
What happens when all tests have been passed?
When a student has passed all the tests or had valid exemptions recorded in their Log Book they can exchange their Log Book for an ECDL Certification which is proof of having reached the necessary standard. The completed Log Book must be sent to the BCS who will issue a personal, unique ECDL Certification.
